Free Typing Practice
Learn the QWERTY keyboard one pair of keys at a time, then test your speed.
Choose a lesson. New to typing? Start at lesson 1 and work through them in order. Earn three stars by reaching 97% accuracy.
Type as many words as you can before the time runs out. Your speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), and the clock starts when you press the first key.
Letters fall from the sky. Type each one before it reaches the ground. You have three lives, and the rain gets faster as you score.
Caps Lock is on. Press the Caps Lock key once to turn it off.
How to use the typing practice
- Lessons teach two new keys at a time. The key to press lights up on the on-screen keyboard, and the line under the text tells you which finger to use.
- Speed Test measures how many words you can type in 30 seconds, one minute or two minutes.
- Letter Rain is a game. Type the falling letters before they land.
If you press the wrong key, the letter turns red and waits for you. Find the right key and carry on. Accuracy matters more than speed while you are learning, which is why the stars in each lesson are awarded for accuracy alone.
Where your fingers go
Every finger has a home. Place your left hand on A S D F and your right hand on J K L ; with both thumbs resting on the space bar. The F and J keys have a small raised bump so you can find them without looking.
From there, each finger reaches up or down for the keys nearest to it and then comes back. The colours on the keyboard above show which keys belong to which finger.
Tips for learning faster
- Sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor and your wrists level.
- Keep your eyes on the screen. Looking down at the keys slows you down for good.
- Practise for 15 to 20 minutes a day rather than two hours once a week.
- Repeat a lesson until you earn three stars before moving to the next one.
Typing practice questions
Common questions from people learning to type.
Is this typing practice free?
Yes. Every lesson, the speed test and the Letter Rain game are free to use for as long as you like. There is no account to create and nothing to download.
How do I learn to type without looking at the keys?
Rest your fingers on the home row: A, S, D and F for the left hand and J, K, L and the semicolon key for the right. Each finger only reaches for the keys closest to it and then returns home. Follow the lessons in order, watch the screen instead of your hands, and let the highlighted key on the on-screen keyboard guide you.
What is a good typing speed?
Most people who type regularly manage around 40 words per minute. A beginner usually starts between 10 and 20. For office work, 40 to 50 words per minute with very few mistakes is a comfortable target.
How long does it take to learn to type?
With 15 to 20 minutes of practice a day, most learners know where every letter is within a few weeks. Speed keeps improving for months after that, as long as you keep using the correct fingers.
Is my progress saved?
Your stars and best scores are saved in your web browser on the device you are using, so they will be there the next time you visit from the same device. Nothing is sent to us.
Can I practise on a phone or tablet?
The page opens on a phone, but learning finger positions needs a real keyboard. Use a desktop computer or a laptop, or connect a keyboard to your tablet.
